FAQs

How much should we pay an in-house lawyer in London?

Florit Legal’s 2026 London salary guide puts the most common base salary for a newly qualified in-house lawyer at £67,000 to £77,000. That rises to £87,000 to £101,000 at four years’ qualified, £107,000 to £132,000 at seven years and £129,000 to £161,000 at ten years or more. A London Head of Legal most commonly earns £142,000 to £189,000. These are gross annual basic salaries for full-time roles, so bonus, pension and other benefits come on top. When hiring for an in-house legal team, budget for the experience the work genuinely needs.

What is the typical General Counsel salary in London?

In Florit Legal’s 2026 London guide, General Counsel base salary depends heavily on the type of business. Typical ranges are £145,000 to £190,000 at a start-up or scale-up, £160,000 to £240,000 if private equity-backed, £180,000 to £230,000 at an overseas-listed company, £190,000 to £250,000 on AIM and £200,000 to £400,000 in the FTSE 350. Bonus is extra, ranging from 20–40% of base at a start-up to 30–60% in the FTSE 350. Agreeing the package early is one of the first steps in any General Counsel search.

Does a Head of Legal earn less than a General Counsel in London?

Florit Legal’s 2026 London guide puts the most common base salary for a Head of Legal at £142,000 to £189,000, within an overall range of £128,000 to £210,000. That almost exactly matches General Counsel base pay at a London start-up or scale-up, at £145,000 to £190,000. So a Head of Legal title doesn’t necessarily mean lower base pay than a General Counsel title; much depends on the business. If you’re weighing up roles, it helps to understand how the two titles differ. All figures are gross annual basic salary for full-time roles.

How much more do in-house lawyers earn in London than in the rest of the UK?

Florit Legal’s 2026 salary guides show the London premium growing with seniority. For a newly qualified in-house lawyer, the most common base salary is £67,000 to £77,000 in London, compared with £51,000 to £67,000 for salaries outside London. At ten years or more, it’s £129,000 to £161,000 against £88,000 to £124,000. For a Head of Legal, it’s £142,000 to £189,000 against £106,000 to £141,000. So the gap widens from roughly £10,000–£16,000 at NQ level to £36,000–£48,000 for a Head of Legal. All figures are gross annual basic salaries.

What does it take to earn at the top of the London in-house salary range?

Florit Legal’s 2026 London guide shows a premium band above the most common range at every level. At five years’ qualified, for example, the most common base salary is £93,000 to £110,000, but up to £126,000 is achievable. Those top figures go to over-performers who stand out: a demonstrable record of success in their current job, specialist expertise, or exceptional circumstances. If you’re benchmarking yourself, compare your track record and specialism honestly against the role you’re targeting, not just your years of qualification.
